l have been told that l can get it chipped to a much higher bhp.

Surely this will effect its reliability and longevity?

Try not bolt aftermarket bits or there will be a question of reliability. The best way to tune ur car is using computer tuning. An expert will plug his laptop to ur car ECU & will start configuring ur car. It is the safest way & most reliable way. In the end, u will get a car with higher horsepower & torque without affecting the car is reliability. But it is always best to check to with a highly-experienced expert before u perform & modifying. By the way, Skoda engines r the same as Volkswagen so there really is not an issue with reliability as Volkswagen engines can be trusted.

You can change it but you should the car parts and how they work. But if the car really needs it change. It might last longer if you just leave it. Modifications can do serious amounts of damage if done wrong. So it truly depends on what you're replacing.
